Antarctic-Scale Ice Flow Lines Map Generation and Basin Delineation

چکیده

Ice flow lines are the most dominant feature of ice sheet surfaces. Accurate delineation basins is a prerequisite for mass balance. We therefore propose new weight balance-based approach to extract present comprehensive and then re-delineate Antarctic basin on this basis. In our approach, we define three impact factors represent directional accuracy, smoothness, physical character. Following this, method proposed, in which those integrated via weights, determine pointing pixels (points or subpixels line). After that, continuously tracked. Finally, were re-delineated based it. The results indicate that derived exhibit rational pattern against DEM proposed remarkably improves performance results. Furthermore, compared with IMBIE (Ice Mass Balance Inter-Comparison Exercise) basins, redivided slight diversity, differences area length less than 11% accuracy 1° (covering more 90% area). As result, beneficial investigation in-depth mechanism shelf calving balance Antarctic.

Ice flow of the Antarctic ice sheet.

We present a reference, comprehensive, high-resolution, digital mosaic of ice motion in Antarctica assembled from multiple satellite interferometric synthetic-aperture radar data acquired during the International Polar Year 2007 to 2009. The data reveal widespread, patterned, enhanced flow with tributary glaciers reaching hundreds to thousands of kilometers inland over the entire continent. Thi...

Rapid bottom melting widespread near Antarctic Ice Sheet grounding lines.

As continental ice from Antarctica reaches the grounding line and begins to float, its underside melts into the ocean. Results obtained with satellite radar interferometry reveal that bottom melt rates experienced by large outlet glaciers near their grounding lines are far higher than generally assumed. The melting rate is positively correlated with thermal forcing, increasing by 1 meter per ye...

Collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet after local destabilization of the Amundsen Basin.

The future evolution of the Antarctic Ice Sheet represents the largest uncertainty in sea-level projections of this and upcoming centuries. Recently, satellite observations and high-resolution simulations have suggested the initiation of an ice-sheet instability in the Amundsen Sea sector of West Antarctica, caused by the last decades' enhanced basal ice-shelf melting. Whether this localized de...

Linear sea-level response to abrupt ocean warming of major West Antarctic ice basin

Antarctica’s contribution to global sea-level rise has recently been increasing1. Whether its ice discharge will become unstable and decouple from anthropogenic forcing2–4 or increase linearly with the warming of the surrounding ocean is of fundamental importance5. Under unabated greenhouse-gas emissions, ocean models indicate an abrupt intrusion of warm circumpolar deepwater into the cavity be...

Snow on Antarctic Sea Ice

Snow on Antarctic sea ice plays a complex and highly variable role in air-sea-ice interaction processes and the Earth’s climate system. Using data collected mostly during the past 10 years, this paper reviews the following topics: snow thickness and snow type and their geographical and seasonal variations; snow grain size, density, and salinity; frequency of occurrence of slush; thermal conduct...
